Molten metal(5) is sucked into a riser linked to a melting furnace(1) beneath the surface of the molten metal and returned to the furnace, in order to store it. An electric heater which heats the riser is located in the vicinity of the position reacted by the molten metal drawn into it. A vacuum source for reducing the pressure in the upper end of the riser is connected to a changeover valve to which a duct(24) leading exhaust gas from the furnace to the riser, is connected. Exhuast gas is fed into the riser as the metal falls back into the furnace. Oxidation of the molten metal and clogging of the riser passage is prevented through protection by low-O2 exhaust gas.
