A sorting device comprises four plastics strips (15-18) each suspended from the free end of a horizontal pivotable arm 8-11 movable between a normal position and one other position, to direct mail into appropriate channels. The arms are moved by rotary magnets 23-26 connected thereto by levers 27-30 having rollers 31-34 on their free ends in spring contact with intermediate members 35-38 attached to the arms 8-11, which are spring-returned to their normal position. The mail is moved in a direction parallel to the pivotal axis of the arms by two pairs of roller conveyers (1-4) co-operating with a feeder hopper (5, 6) and a further two pairs (19-22) below the arms. There are five separate conveying channels formed between the arms and a fixed guide wall (not shown). The movement of the arms is limited by stops 13, 14 and the arms are strengthened by having an inverted U cross-section and a stiffening bend in their longitudinal axes. |
