PURPOSE:To provide a fluorescent substance constituted by Ce<3+>-activated fluorescent substance of novel composition, having outstanding characteristics for use in beam index tube, also usable in the wide sector of optically applied instrumentation, giving emission spectra relevant to silicon photodiodes. CONSTITUTION:The objective fluorescent substance giving emission spectra in a red-infrared range, of formula Mg(Y1-x Cex)2S4 (x is 0.00005-0.025). For the preparation of said substance, one of the processes is as follows; an aqueous solution of Ce(NO3)2 is poured in a Y2O3-MgCO3 mixture, being sufficiently mixed followed by drying at 120 deg.C for 12hr. the resulting mixture is packed in a quarz boat to carry out calcination in a H2S gaseous stream, at 950 deg.C for 5hr. After cooling, further calcination (at 1,000 deg.C for >=30hr, in total) is performed several times.
