PURPOSE:To put a magnetic brush in cleaning operation without any hindrance even if a defect in feeding transfer paper occurs by allowing the magnetic brush to clean an image carrier which is fed beyond the position of a discharge transfer device brought under ON/OFF control in synchronization with paper feed timing. CONSTITUTION:When a sensor 12 does not turn on within a specific time after a register roller 7 is rotated, a defect in paper feeding is judged and the transfer device 8 is not operated. When the sensor 12 and transfer device 8 are so programmed that the transfer device 8 is turned on at a specific time after the sensor 12 turns on, the transfer device 8 never turns on before transfer paper P reaches a transfer position. Further, the sensor 12 turns off as the rear end of the transfer paper P passes through the 2nd sensor 12, but the transfer device 8 is only turned off within the specific time after the sensor 12 turns off. Consequently, the cleaning of the magnetic brush is carried out without any hindrance even if the defect in feeding the transfer paper occurs.
