PURPOSE:To obtain a diaphragming device without securing a large space at its periphery by arranging many ring-like transparent electrodes formed concentrically along the inner peripheries of an opposed glass bases. CONSTITUTION:The transparent electrodes 5 are shaped like films and formed concentrically along the inner peripheries of the glass bases 2, 3, one or many electrodes obtained by arranging many ring-like transparent electrode films are superposed to constitute a multilayer structure and spacers 4 and liquid crystal layers 7 are alternately superposed while changing their arrangement positions to prevent the spacers 4 from light transmission. Consequently, it is unnecessary to independently form a diaphragm driving mechanism and an extremely narrow space also can be sufficiently utilized.
