PURPOSE:To properly control tension in a high temperature range, by a method wherein linear motors, exerting a driving force in the advancing direction of a continuously running metal strip or in a reverse direction, are provided, tensions on the upper stream and the downstream of the motor are divided from each other for control. CONSTITUTION:A metal strip 1 is caused to run from the direction of an arrow mark 2 through a bridle roll 4 on the incoming side, a liner motor 5, and a bridle roll 4' on the outgoing side. The bridle rolls 4 and 4' pull the metal strip 1 in the directions of arrow marks 15 and 15' to exert tension T on the metal strip 1 in a tension control section 3. When tension T' is generated in the direction of an arrow mark 8 by the linear motors 5 and 5', tension in tension control sections 3' and 3'' produces T+T' and T-T', and tensions on the upper stream side and the downstream side of the linear motors 5 and 5' are divided from each other for control. This constitution enables proper control of tension in a high temperature range in the middle of running of the metal strip 1, stabilization of passing of a belt, and passing of a strip at a high speed.
