The invention relates to a hydraulic vibration damper with adjustable damping force for vehicles. For independent adjustment of the damping force in a tension and compression direction a bypass device is provided, which has two rotary slide valves adjustable independently of one another. These two rotary slide valves form variable cross-section through passages of the bypass device, a non-return valve being assigned to each through passage. The first non-return valve is designed to shut off in the tension phase, whilst the second non-return valve shuts off in the compression phase.
