In a device for lowering a fuel element (BE) into a pool (W) by means of a hoist which can be moved over the water surface, it is provided for the purpose of positioning the coupling point above the water surface that at least one guide tube (2; 3; 19; 23; 24), arranged upright under water and open at the top, for accommodating the fuel element (BE) is provided and that there is provided in the guide tube a fuel element carrier (7), which can be displaced in the longitudinal direction of the guide tube and is adapted to the inside cross-section thereof and is displaced downwards under the weight of a fuel element placed on to it, and that at least one throttle point (14; 15; 16) is provided through which water displaced in the guide tube by the moving fuel element carrier (7) and the fuel element (BE) can flow in a throttled fashion in order to set the lowering rate, and that a device (12, 13; 20; 27, 28, 30, 31, 32, 33) is provided for the positive upward movement of the fuel element carrier (7) relieved of the fuel element. <IMAGE>
