Scoring apparatus for use with a bowling alley may be operated by a keyboard or automatically by sensing the number of pins knocked down. First and second ball scores are entered, in the former case, on different rows and provision is made for correcting errors within a predetermined time, key-lock to prevent multiple entry in a row, the accumulation of scores by teams and individual players, the entry of bonus points, handicaps and pacebowler scores. Running totals are recorded on plastic or metal strips which are conveyed to display racks, an optical system then projecting an enlarged image on appropriate parts of display panels, one 9 for the players and another 10 for the public. In the automatic arrangement, not only are pins counted when knocked down but if all pins are knocked down a scanning device causes entry of the appropriate bonus points. Fouls are detected by photo-electric apparatus.
