PURPOSE:To advantageously obtain the titled compound, by adding a 2,4- dialkylphenol and alkali metal hydroxide to a specific hydrocarbon based solvent in a specific proportion, heating the mixture at a temperature permitting azeotropic dehydration and reacting the formed anhydrous salt solution with gaseous carbon dioxide. CONSTITUTION:(A) A 2,4-dialkylphenol and (B) an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide in amounts to keep the molar ratio of the components (A) to (B) at >=1.25 are added to a hydrocarbon based solvent having 100-300 deg.C boiling point. The resultant mixture is then heated to carry out azeotropic dehydration of water in the system and water formed therein and prepare a solution of an anhydrous alkali metal salt of a dialkylphenol. Gaseous carbon dioxide is then reacted therewith, preferably at <=170 deg.C temperature to industrially and advantageously afford the titled compound under carboxylation condition of the low temperature under the low pressure using the inexpensive alkali source. A dialkylphenol fraction preferably >=30% raw material (A) may be used as the above-mentioned raw material (A).
