PURPOSE:To improve the workability, the productivity and the reliability by refining and arranging no only a diffraction grating by forming a grating but an orientation processing area, and also providing plural arrangement pitches. CONSTITUTION:The optical modulation is executed by arranging the refining areas 140, 150 of an orientation processing having at least two kinds of different liquid crystal orientation functions, at plural pitches on at least one substrate surface in two piece of substrates 110, 111, inserting and holding a liquid crystal 170 between two pieces of substrates 110, 111, and controlling an oriented state of the liquid crystal 170. In such a way, it is possible to obtain a liquid crystal optical modulator whose workability and productivity are high, in which the steepness of the orientation part against a voltage application is large and which is suitable for time division driving, and can maintain a prescribed diffracting condition against various incident light beams, and also, whose display color is an achromatic color and which scarcely causes an uneven color. |
