PURPOSE:To indent statements immediately at the time of generating a program by storing statements to be indented and statements, which should be released from identation, in a table. CONSTITUTION:When the number of a start line to be displayed in inputted from an input device 3, it is read in and is stored in an absolute shift extent table 44 of a memory 4. An editing module 5 refers to a relative shift extent table 43 to obtain an extent of absolute shift, and this extent is stored in the table 44. A source text in the editing line is transferred from the table 43 to the module 5 and is indented and displayed based on the extent of absolute shift. When the line number of a source text to be added is inputted from the input device 3, the module 5 reads and sets it. The extent of relative shift is totalized and is stored as the extent of absolute shift in the table 44. When a source text line is inputted, the module 5 checks the text line to obtain the extent of absolute shift, and an image is displayed in accordance with this extent.
