PURPOSE: To obtain a subject composition having an excellent sizing capability, consisting of a water soluble polymer obtained by copolymerizing each specific long chain alkyl group-containing monomer, cationic vinyl monomer and nonionic monomer in a specific ratio, and ketene dimmer. CONSTITUTION: This composition of a sizing agent having +50 to +150 mVζpotential is obtained by dispersing ketene dimmer in a water soluble copolymer solution obtained by copolymerizing (A) 3-15 mol% long chain alkyl group- containing monomer having a 4-28C alkyl group and a polymerizable functional group [preferably a compound of formula I (R1 is H or methyl; R2 , R3 are each a 1-3C alkyl; R4 is a 4-28C alkyl; Y is O or NH; Z is a 1-4C alkylene or the like; X is a halogen or the like), etc.], (B) 15-50 mol% cationic vinyl monomer not having a 4-28C alkyl group [preferably a compound of formula II (R2 ', R3 ' are each a 1-3C alkyl; R5 is H, a 1-3C alkyl or the like), etc.], and (C) 35-82 mol% non-ionic monomer not having a 4-28C alkyl group and an ionic group (e.g.; acrylamide).
