PURPOSE: To avoid thermal and chemical action due to flow-out of liquid metal by coating at least a partial region of a structure subjected to flow-out of liquid metal with a cellular refractory material inactive to the liquid metal where the cell retards combustion of liquid metal. CONSTITUTION: A layer 4 of refractory material is provided on the surface of a stab 1 in an integral fast neutron reactor. The layer 4 is inactive to liquid sodium and has cellular texture where individual cells freely pass the liquid sodium flowing out onto the layer 4. Upon rupture of piping 2, the liquid sodium flows out and permeates into the layer 4 and then distributed over the entire coupling volume through the juxtaposed cells 5. Consequently, high temperature sodium touches an alumina pole 6 and cooled.
