The vertical winnowing machine has a rotating winnowing impeller (11). It has curved vanes which cause the material being winnowed to flow radially inwards in the opposite direction to the centrifugal force and then to flow away from the impeller (11) in the axial direction. The material flows out through the duct (20) into the outlet chamber (21). The cross-sectional area of this outlet chamber (21) is significantly greater than the cross-sectional area of the outlet duct (20) so that a step (22) is formed between the duct (20) and chamber (2).
