Process and device for burning carbonaceous and chlorine-containing matter, in which the treatment is carried out in a fluidised bed to separate the volatile matter contained, including chlorine, followed by the separate combustion of the chlorine-containing volatile matter and of the carbonaceous residue, which form the treatment products, the heat resulting from the combustion being transmitted (5, 17) to a fluid to be vaporised and/or heated. The treatment for separating the volatile matter is performed in an expanded fluidised bed in a zone (30) fed with carbonaceous and chlorine-containing matter, with a short residence time, without heat exchange with the fluid to be vaporised and/or heated. The combustion of the chlorine-containing volatile matter takes place above a dense fluidised bed (4) whereas the combustion of the carbonaceous residue takes place predominantly in the dense bed (4) while producing an indirect heat exchange (5) with the fluid to be vaporised and/or heated. A controlled flow (20) of the material of the dense combustion bed is passed through the zone for separating the volatile matter from the carbonaceous and chlorine-containing matter. Good separation of volatile matter and very complete combustion of the carbonaceous and chlorine-containing matter without rapid corrosion of the equipment. <IMAGE>
