Cisplatin betaine derivs. of formula (I) are new, where R = Me or Et; X = NO3, ClO4 or F. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are antitumour and antiviral agents. They have better water-solubility than cisplatin and higher activity, e.g. against human bladder carcinoma cells in vitro. In an example, an aq. suspension of cisplatin was treated with 2 equivs. of AgNO3, stirred at 87 deg. C for 90 mins., cooled to 0 deg. C, left for 2 hrs., filtered, treated with 2 equivs. of betaine, stirred at 37 deg. C for 2 hrs., and evaporated to give (I; R=Me, X=NO3).
