The air-bags are fixed near the top and bottom side-window edges, so as to protect passengers from a side collision. The top (25) and bottom (20) bags move towards each other on inflation so as to bring mating faces (25a,20a) into contact so as to form a sidewall with limited resistance to transverse forces. The mating faces can be formed by hook-clasp fasteners, and the bags can be shaped so that, after detachment from each other they cover the jagged edges of the destroyed window pane (4). USE/ADVANTAGE - Maximum protection of vehicle driver or passenger on side impact.
