PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus advantageous in terms of improvement of the optical performance of a photographic optical system to be imaged, while contriving miniaturization, when being carried. SOLUTION: By sliding a lens cover 30 from an upper limit position to a lower limit position, a second lens barrel 22 is made to project from a collapsed position to a projecting position by a driving mechanism 32. Thus, the optical path length between a second lens 2604 positioned at the rearmost part of the optical path of the photographic optical system 18 and an imaging surface of an imaging device 16 is secured. By making the lens cover 30 slide from the lower limit position to the upper limit position, the second lens barrel 22 is collapsed from the projecting position to the collapsed position by the driving mechanism 32. Thus, an objective 2402 and a flash 112 are covered with the lens cover 30, and simultaneously, the optical path length between the second lens 2604 positioned at the rearmost part of the optical path of the photographic optical system 18 and the imaging surface of the imaging device 16 is shortened.
