PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve gear equipped with a variable valve characteristic mechanism which enhances the workability of adjustment work of a clearance in a transmission path of valve driving force reaching an engine valve from a valve cam through the variable valve characteristic mechanism and cam follower. SOLUTION: A variable valve characteristic mechanism C of a variable valve gear 20 is equipped with an adjustment mechanism A for preventing or suppressing the occurrence of a clearance in a transmission path of valve driving force of an intake cam 21a reaching an intake valve 7 from a cam 21a through a sub-cam 40 and rocker arm 24. The adjustment mechanism A includes a support shaft 50 which rockably supports the sub-cam 40 and which is provided to the holder 30 so as to be positionally adjustable, and an adjustment bolt 60 and adjustment screw 70 which are provided to the holder 30 and which move a position of a rocking center line Ls of the sub cam 40 in the direction opposite to each other.
