PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shift device capable of securing an advantage of small size by employing a by-wire system and then installation characteristics on a vehicle while securing a space around the shift device when out of operation. SOLUTION: The shift device 3 is provided with a motor 8 rotating a shift lever 4 around a rotation operation axis 12 as a center to a retreat position P for inhibiting operation of the shift lever 4 out of a rotation operation range R. A control circuit determines if the operation of the shift lever 4 is necessary or not based on a driving condition of the vehicle.
