An apparatus and method are provided to verify the composition of a medic al fluid in a fluid container. The verification is performed at a centralize d location, where light is transmitted through the fluid and detected by a s ensor that generates signals representative of the spectral data of the actu al composition of the fluid. These signals are compared with the spectral da ta of an expected composition of the fluid. Based on the comparison, a label is generated that identifies the composition of the fluid and is affixed to the fluid container. The fluid container, with the verified fluid, is distr ibuted to the point of care.
