PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging optical system or the like which attains compatibility between thinning and optical performance coping with even a megapixel. SOLUTION: The imaging optical system includes at least a negative first lens group, a positive second lens group, and a third lens group having a lens of which the convex surface is faced to an image side. Power is varied so that space between the first lens group and the second lens group may be smaller at a telephoto end than at a wide angle end and space between the second lens group and the third lens group may be larger at the telephoto end than at the wide angle end.
