This invention provides a powder material, which is capable of obtaining a heating value flat is greater than that of MgFe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB>, and the manufacturing method thereof. The powder material is expressed by the general formula Mg<SUB>1-x</SUB>A<SUB>x</SUB>Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>4 </SUB>(where A in the formula is at least one element selected from the group of Ca, Sr and Ba, and the range of x in the formula is 0.05<=x<=0.95). It is preferred that the range of x in the general formula be 0.2<=x<=0.8. Also, it is preferred that the size of crystallites on the (440) surface be 80 to 200 Å.
