PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of surely curvature-separating recording material from a photoreceptor or an intermediate transfer body without arranging a separation pawl or a destaticizing brush on the exit side of a transfer nip. SOLUTION: A hardener application device 60 is arranged on the downstream side of a resist roller 83. The hardener application device 60 applies a hardener which is hardened in response to electric field to the top area of the recording material P by moving a coating member 63 up and down by an attaching/detaching mechanism 61 in image formation to which setting of thin paper is applied. A power source D2 applies hardening voltage higher than transfer voltage in timing that the recording material P passes through a secondary transfer part T2 so as to harden the top area of the recording material P, whereby the top area is made to project from the secondary transfer part T2 and the recording material is rapidly curvature-separated from the intermediate transfer belt 51.
