PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce zinc oxide having a shape similar to a sphere, in which zinc oxide particles each having a plate-like shape are agglomerated, particularly, the shape similar to that of an aegagropila. SOLUTION: A method for producing zinc oxide comprises a step of mixing an aqueous solution of a zinc compound, a carboxylic acid and/or its salt and an alkali compound. When the amount of the carboxylic acid and/or its salt to be mixed is shown by the molar ratio of the sum of a carboxyl group (-COOH) and its salt (-COOM) to the zinc atom of the zinc compound, the molar ratio is≥0.2. The amount of the alkali compound to be mixed is the sum of the amount required to neutralize the carboxyl groups (-COOH) existing in the carboxylic acid and/or its salt and the amount equivalent to a range of (2X+0.001)/n to (4X+0.2)/n (mole/liter) (wherein X (mole/liter) is the zinc concentration of the zinc compound; and n is the valence number of the alkali compound).
