[Also in Group XXXVI] A steering-wheel and steering-column assembly has the hub 5 of the steering-wheel secured to the steering-column 1 by a nut 18 accessible from outside the steering column, the nut embodying electrical contacts, &c., 9a, 24. The nut 18 is knurled and engages a thread 19 on the steering-column, so that when it is tightened against a spring-washer 20 and a shoulder of the steering-wheel hub 5, a steel ring 6 in the hub is forced against an abutment-ring 7 secured to the steering column. A hornoperating switch 24 mounted in the nut 18 is connected through a conductor 11a to a spring- biased contact 9a engaging a conducting-ring 13 carried by a support-ring 14 of rubber &c, press-fitted into a recess in the steering-wheel hub 5. The conducting-ring 13 is in turn connected through a line 11 to a spring-biased contact 9 engaging a conducting-ring 4 in an insulating support-ring 2 fast upon the non-rotary steering column tube. |
