A vehicle detection system based on a vehicle-roadside communication and a traffic signal control method using the vehicle detection system are provided to reduce a traffic congestion by controlling a traffic signal by considering both turning vehicles and straight-running vehicles around a crossroad. A vehicle detection system includes first to n-th sensor nodes(10a-10n), a telematics terminal, a first microprocessor, and a signal control terminal(40). The sensor nodes are arranged on both sides of a road around a crossroad(60) with a predetermined distance. The telematics terminal receives a speed signal, a current position signal, a unique ID, and running direction data of a vehicle from a GPS(Global Positioning System) satellite. The telematics terminal receives a wireless information request signal and delivers response signals to the sensor nodes. The first microprocessor receives the response signal through an antenna and converts the response signal into an analog signal. The first microprocessor analyzes traffic densities in forward and left/right directions and adjusts the traffic signal based on the analyzed traffic densities. When the traffic density is low, a lighting duration of the traffic light is reduced. The lighting duration is increased, when the density is high. |
