A brake system of an elevator comprising a brake system body having a brake coil, and a discharge circuit connected in parallel with the brake coil. The brake system body applies a brake force to a cage by stopping power supply to the brake coil, and releases brake force applied to the cage by supplying power to the brake coil. The discharge circuit attenuates the current of the brake coil when power supply to the brake coil is stopped. The discharge circuit has a discharge parallel portion including a resistor, and an overvoltage absorption element connected in parallel with the resistor and sustaining a voltage applied to the resistor within a predetermined range.
