PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection display apparatus usable as an electronic display or a film observation backlight, capable of achieving sufficient brightness usable as the backlight while preventing upsizing of the apparatus and the increase in power consumption. SOLUTION: The projection display apparatus 100 includes: an optical engine 8 including a light source 1, configured to form an optical image modulated based on image information; a projection lens 3 for enlarging and projecting the light emitted from the optical engine 8; and a screen 4 through which the projection light from the projecting lens 3 is transmitted, then, on which the image is displayed based on the image information. The screen 4 includes: a fresnel lens sheet 41 for converting the light from the projection lens 3 to a nearly collimated light; a backlight panel 5 including a light source 54, configured to emit the planar illuminating light; and a diffusion sheet 42 for diffusing the light from the fresnel lens sheet 41 and the backlight panel 5.
