The present invention relates to a safety system for occupants of a vehicle 1 , having means such as, in particular, acceleration sensors and/or pressure sensors for sensing a side crash. The safety system 20 also includes means for detecting the lateral velocity vQ of vehicle 1 . The control of the restraining devices of the safety system is able to be influenced by the detected lateral velocity. A method for the control of a safety system is also described.
