A suspension device for an elevator has a main rope for suspending a vertically movable body and a rope stop device for hitching the main rope to the vertically movable body. The rope stop device is provided at the vertically movable body. Further, the rope stop device has a rotation lever to which an end of the main rope is connected and that is rotated relative to the vertically movable body as the vertically movable body moves vertically relative to the end of the main rope, and also has an urging body for urging a displacement body in the direction opposing downward displacement of the vertically movable body relative to the end of the main rope.
