PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing an optical film which prevents curling of edge parts and carrying failure by improving the strength of edge parts and provides a wide and thin optical film without a drag or wrinkle, in manufacturing a wide and thin optical film by a solution casting method using a drum support while requiring no special units to be arranged, an optical film obtained thereby, a polarizing plate and a liquid crystal display. SOLUTION: The method is used to manufacture a thin optical film with solution casting manufacturing equipment and has a casting process of casting a dope consisting of a raw resin dissolved in a solvent onto a drum support from a die to form a web, and, after peeling of the web from the drum support, at least a drawing process, a drying process and a winding process. The amount of residual solvent in the lateral direction of the web is made to be lower in the central part than in the edge parts during the period between the peeling of the web from the drum support and the initiation of drawing in the drawing process.
