PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce an operation shutdown period and save a large amount of costs required for operators of a nuclear power plant by improving the correctness and speed to perform visual inspections. SOLUTION: Methods and systems 56 for quantitative image quality assessment of an imaging system, such as an in-vessel visual inspection system, has a target 10, an image capture device 18 and a computer 58. The target includes one or more image features with varying spatial resolutions and predetermined spatial frequencies. The image capture device is configured to capture an image of the target 10. The computer 58 includes a processor, a memory 60, and computer executable instructions. The computer 58 is configured to receive the captured image, prepare one or more intensity profiles across the captured image responsive to the predetermined spatial frequencies, and determine a modulation transfer function responsive to the one or more intensity profiles.
