Salt cores for casting, especially die casting, light metal components consist of compressed, optionally sintered, alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salts. They also contain 2 - 30 wt% of finely divided carbonates which are decomposed by acids. An independent claim is included for a method for die casting light metal alloy components using the cores, in which they are dissolved out with acid after casting.
