PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video camera capable of stabilizing a focusing operation. SOLUTION: In the video camera, an image sensor 16 has an imaging face 16f to which an optical image of a field through a focus lens 14 is projected, and performs the process of forming an image of a field repeatedly. The process of altering the position of the focus lens 14 within a specific range repeatedly is performed parallel with the process of forming an image of a field. The process of detecting a high area AF evaluation value from an image of a field repeatedly is performed parallel with the process of altering the position of the lens. The process of determining a focusing direction is performed when a quantity of variation in the high area AF evaluation value exceeds a threshold TH. A mountain climb process for adjusting the focus lens 14 to a focusing position is started when a parameter value relating to the number of times that the process of determining a focusing direction is performed satisfies specific conditions. In this case, the threshold TH is increased as the focus lens 14 is located closer to the focusing position. Starting sensitivity for the mountain climb process is lowered as the focus lens 14 is closer to the focusing position. This makes it possible to stabilize the focusing operation.
