PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the signal quality even and lessen cross writing when recording data. SOLUTION: The magnetic disk has data recording surface divided circumferentially into a first area and a second area which is larger than the first area. In the first area at least out of the first and second areas, guard bands are formed to magnetically separate the radially adjoining recording tracks, and the width of the recordable portion in the second area of each recording track is wider than the width of the recordable portion in the first area.
