<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing the S-isomer of a 4-halo-3-hydroxybutyric acid ester having high optical purity from a mixture of both enantiomers of a 4-halo-3-hydroxybutyric acid ester, a method for producing the R-isomer of 3-hydroxy-γ-butyrolactone from the R-isomer of a 4-halo-3-hydroxybutyric acid ester, an enzyme CHBH (4-chloro-3-hydroxybutyrate hydrolase) derived from microorganisms and usable for the production method, and a gene encoding the enzyme. <P>SOLUTION: The method uses (a) a specific base sequence or (b) a base sequence hybridizable with the specific base sequence under a stringent condition and encoding a protein having RhCHBH enzyme (Rhizobium-derived 4-chloro-3-hydroxybutyrate hydrolase) activity. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
