摘要 <p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform a compression coding processing in accordance with an operational environment or a CPU performance. <P>SOLUTION: In an image compression apparatus, a CPU 112 monitors its own load level and performs compression coding processing corresponding to the load level. If the load level is high, processing is switched to a compression algorithm less reducing a processing burden of the CPU. If the load level is low and there is a margin in a throughput of the CPU, processing is switched to a compression algorithm improving image quality even when the processing burden of the CPU is increased. Therefore, even if the operational environment of an image compression system is varied every time, compression coding can be performed while maintaining peak image quality that is possible in the operational environment at that time, and keeping a required compression speed.
