PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten focusing time by efficiently detecting a focusing position. SOLUTION: When subject luminance is low and an AF process is performed, AF auxiliary light is emitted toward the subject. The subject luminance before the start of the emission of the AF auxiliary light and the subject luminance after it are measured. When the subject luminance EV3 after the start of the emission has increased from the subject luminance EV1 before the start of the emission, a focus lens 15a is moved toward the long distance side lens end from the close distance side lens end. When the subject luminance EV3 has not increased from the subject luminance EV1, the focus lens 15a is moved toward the close distance side lens end from the long distance side lens end, thereby detecting a focusing position.
