A tube 2 of plastics material is connected to a sheet 1 of plastics material, e.g. P.V.C., to lie parallel to the sheet surface by welding at 3 around an opening 5 in the side of the tube and a matching opening 4 in the sheet. The weld 3 may be square or circular. One end of the tube is closed by pinch welding and the other end has a non-return valve or air or gas cylinder attached thereto. Apparatus for forming the weld 3 comprises an aluminium plate 6 having a brass finger 8 mounted to extend parallel thereto. A brass fitment 10 is attached to a high frequency welding machine and a circular rim 12 is secured to the fitment 10 to provide a cutting edge to make a tear seal simultaneously with the weld. In operation, adhesive tape is applied to the finger 8 to act as a current barrier and the tube 2 is positioned thereon. The sheet 1 is laid on top of the tube with the openings 4, 5 in registration facing upwardly. The tube is sealed to the sheet by high frequency welding. A plate (13), Fig. 10 (not shown), is attached to the mounting plate of the welding machine and forms the pinch weld at one end of the tube simultaneously with the weld 3. In a modification (not shown), a bank of fingers may be provided to weld several tubes simultaneously to sheet material.</p> |
