A method and apparatus for preventing a steam cleaner from overheating is provided to ensure reliable operation of the steam cleaner and maintain a moderate temperature of a boiler of the steam cleaner in a range of 135 degrees to 140 degrees. In a method for preventing overheating of a steam cleaner which comprises a water tank, a boiler, a water supply pump, and a temperature sensor, the method comprises the steps of: checking the amount of water in the water tank(S2); applying power to the boiler if water is detected in the water tank(S4); detecting temperature of the boiler by the temperature sensor(S5); operating the pump when the temperature of the boiler exceeds a first temperature(S6); cutting off power of boiler when the temperature of the boiler exceeds a second temperature and detecting the temperature of the boiler for a predetermined period of time by the temperature sensor(S7,S8,S9); and if the detected temperature of the boiler exceeds a third temperature, cutting off power of the boiler and pump and generating a warning for lack of water(S10,S11).
