摘要 Hydrocarbons are isomerized at 200-400 DEG F. by contact with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst comprising Pt and Al2O3 activated by contacting a composite of Pt and Al2O3 with an organic acid chloride having an atomic ratio of Cl: C of at least 2: 1 at an activation temperature of 300-650 DEG F. Suitable conditions include a space velocity of 0.5-2 vol/vol/hour and a hydrogen to hydrocarbon mol. ratio of 0.2-5: 1 using liquid or vapour phase at 300-500 p.s.i.g. Comparative examples refer to the isomerization of a hexane feedstock to yield 2-methyl pentane, 3-methyl pentane, 2: 2 dimethylbutane, 2: 3 dimethylbutane cyclic hydrocarbons and pentanes.ALSO:An isomerization catalyst comprises Al2O3 preferably eta alumina, 0,01-1,0% of Pt and 1,0-10% of chlorine, in which at least part of the chlorine is introduced at 300-650 DEG F. into the catalyst by use of an organic acid chloride having an atomic ratio of chlorine to carbon of at least 2 : 1. The catalyst may be used as a granular or pelleted solid in fixed or moving beds. Deposition of Pt on Al2O3 may be achieved by use of H2PtCl6 or precipitation of platinum sulphide from an alumina impregnated with a soluble Pt salt. A specified chlorinator is CCl3COCl. Examples are given.
