A portable sawmill comprises a carriage for moving a saw between two points, the saw has a cutting blade 11 which can move between a substantially vertical cutting position and a substantially horizontal cutting position. The sawmill has a board removal system comprising a deflector 23 mounted adjacent the cutting blade 11 such that when a board has been cut from a log 13 by the sawmill, that board is moved from the log 13 by the deflector 23 as another board is being cut from the log 13 adjacent the first mentioned board.
