[Also in Division A5] The novel 3-keto-13#-(C 2-5 alkyl)-17#-acetylgona-4,9(10)-dienes and the corresponding novel 17# - (1 - hydroxyethyl) compounds are prepared by treating 3-(C 1-5 alkoxy)-13#-(C 2-5 alkyl) - 17# - (1 - hydroxyethyl) - gona - 2,5(10) - dienes with a weak acid in ethanol to give the corresponding gona-5(10)-en-3-ones, treating these with bromine in pyridine to give the required 17#-(1-hydroxyethyl) compounds and oxidizing these with chromium trioxide to the required 17#-acetyl compounds. 3 - Methoxy - 13# - n - butyl - 17# - (1 - hydroxyethyl) - gona - 2,5(10) - diene is prepared by acetylating 3 - methoxy - 13# - n - butyl - 17α- ethynylgona - 1,3,5(10) - trien - 17# - ol (prepared from the corresponding 17-one) to give the 17- acetate, reacting this with N-bromoacetamide in t.-butanol to give 3-methoxy-13#-n-butyl-17α- dibromoacetylgona-1,3,5(10)-trien-17#-ol acetate, debrominating this to give the corresponding 17α-acetyl compound, and reacting this with lithium in liquid ammonia.
