PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an underlaying material, not only used as a Japanese cushion or a cushion but also used as a pillow by rolling up, or used as a mat by arranging two or more the underlaying materials side by side. SOLUTION: In this underlaying material, a connecting side part 2 having a predetermined width and a smaller thickness than the underlaying material body 1 is provided on the peripheral edge part of the sheet-like material body 1 having cushioning performance, the surface, the back or both the surface and the back of one side connecting side part 2a existing on one side of the underlaying material body 1 are provided with a locking member 3a, and the back, the surface or both the surface and the back of an opposite side connecting side part 2b existing at least on the opposite side to the above one side connecting side part 2a are provided with an engagement member 3b removably engaged with the locking member 3a.
