A sheet or plate shear comprises a stationary shear blade mounted on a frame and a movable blade having means for traversing it across the frame to shear a workpiece, the mounting means for the movable blade being supported directly below the stationary blade whereby the compressive forces acting on the stationary blade act through the mounting means to neutralize the opposing forces acting on the movable blade assembly. The shear is used for cutting out welded joints from continuously processed material and comprises a pair of spaced rectangular section knives 6 bolted to the frame 2. A pair of spaced rotatable knives 10 are mounted in a carriage 5 which runs on four rollers 13 in guideways 14 in the frame. The rollers are carried by spindles which project sideways from a centre-plate 12 which passes downwardly and rearwardly of the knives 10. One pair of rollers is directly under the knives 10. The traversing motion of the carriage is obtained from a pair of screws 23 driving ball nuts 24 on the carriage and rotated through gearing by a reversible electric motor 25. Cutter adjustment. The knives 10 are supported by roller bearings 32 on a spindle 31, the ends of which are keyed into eccentric bushes 34. Rotation of the bushes adjusts the knives 10 vertically relative to the knives 6. The clearance between the cutters is adjusted by shims 38 under the heads of the bushes. Work clamps. The work " S " is held at the side which is first engaged by the movable knives 10 by two swing clamps 41 supported on base-plates which are clamped to the frame by bolts 44. The bolts pass through slots in the baseplates so that the clamps can be positioned to suit work of various widths. Bevelling. Further knives set at an angle may be mounted behind the knives 10 for bevelling the edge of the work.</p> |
