PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve engine efficiency and fuel consumption in avoiding valve stamping when conducting valve characteristic control of a supply/exhaust valve and compression ratio control of a combustion chamber. SOLUTION: When conducting valve characteristic control of an inlet valve 21 and variation control of the compression ratio, an upper limit compression ratioεup which is a variation upper limit compression ratio of the compression ratio is determined in accordance with valve characteristics appearing as a control result of the valve characteristics, and the upper limit compression ratioεup is made to be the compression ratio capable of avoiding interference between the intake valve 21 driven in the valve characteristics appearing as the control result of the valve characteristics and a piston 41. When a target compression ratioεt in accordance with a driving state of an engine is higher than the upper limit compression ratioεup, the compression ratio is controlled to be the upper limit compression ratioεt lower than the target compression ratioεt, and thereby, the compression ratio is raised to the maximum compression ratio (upper limit compression ratioεt) to avoid the interference while avoiding the interference between the piston 41 and the intake valve 21.
