PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a nonlinear optical material whose nonlinear optical characteristics will not deteriorate, even if it is manufactured by a sol-gel method, which is superior in workability, has pot life over a long term and has superior nonlinear optical performance, and to provide the nonlinear optical material which has both the nonlinear optical performance and high thermal-stability by cross-linked hardening and a nonlinear optical element in which the nonlinear optical material is used, which has high stability and long life. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the nonlinear optical material provides a solvent removal process for dissolving a nonlinear optically-active compound, having a hydrolyzable silyl group into a solvent and using a raw material solution obtained by hydrolyzing the compound to remove the solvent from the raw material solution, and a cross-linked hardening process for performing cross-linked hardening on the raw material solution after removing the solvent, wherein the solvent contains at least one or more kinds of solvent having a boiling point of 160°C or higher, and the nonlinear optical material is obtained by the method and the nonlinear optical element is provided with the nonlinear optical material.
