<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary joint allowing stable optical data transmission without arranging a light emitting element and a light receiving element in proximity while causing no deterioration of the transmission quality of signal light accompanied by the deviation of an optical axis in the rotary joint provided with an optical data transmission line. <P>SOLUTION: The rotary joint 1 is constituted to perform optical transmission from a rotating cylinder 3 side to a fixed cylinder 2 side by holding the rotating cylinder 3 rotatably to the fixed cylinder 2 through hollow bearings 4a, 4b. In this case, the rotating cylinder 3 is provided with an optical waveguide 19 penetrating the end face C side from the end face D side of the rotating cylinder 3, and a laser diode 13 is disposed on the end face C side opposedly to the end face D side. The fixed cylinder 2 has a photodiode 16 having a light receiving surface larger than the area of the end face B of the optical waveguide 19.
